CHILTON--SPL--Quite the most interesting document in Chilton is the original book of minutes of the Baptists.
They first met at the New Zion Baptist Church at Old Crown Point across the road from the Charner de Graffenreid farm. In February 1883, that church was officially dissolved. In March 1883, the congregation met in the Chilton school house. The meeting was called to order by J. T. Crawford, and W. D. Gaines was chosen to preside with Mr. Crawford secretary. The church was officially named the Baptist Church of Christ of Chilton. Elder L. D. Ewing was the first preacher.
The first lot for the building was bought from W. J. de Bardeleben. It was on the southwest corner of the Chilton tract now owned by C. R. Pierce. The minutes show it took $17 worth of nails to erect the building. The first clerk and board member was W. D. Gaines.
Some people in those days took life more seriously than we do now. The minutes show that two church sisters "had a difficulty." A committee waited on them to straighten things out. Sister "C" was willing to make up, but Sister "G" would not make any concessions. After due consideration and prayer, "fellowship was withdrawn" from Sister "G."
